Back when the paperback cover below came out the Metropolitan Community Church had started offering commitment ceremonies for gay couples. I used to think the idea of gay men emulating heterosexual marriage was merely silly. Later I came to understand the need for a legally recognized relationship to insure property transfer and hospital visiting rights.
