The interesting thing about The Gay Jungle is the attempt to emulate the style of the painted covers used by mainstream paperback publishers. The object of desire surrounded by learning admirers in this manner is typical of, say, Paperback Library when the wanted to trick folks into buying a novel by Zola.
While early gay erotica sometimes sported appealing line art there weren’t painters comparable to Rudolph Belarkski and other collected paperback cover artists.
Once again we see those odd looking eyes that evidently implied queer back then at least to the publishers.
