Inbetween Visits to Durham Regional Hospital

I made it back to Durham Regional shortly after 6:00 p.m. yesterday. Charles had been moved from the ICU to an ordinary private room. He was still zapped, asleep. From the look his face sometimes assumed he must’ve been having nightmares. He woke up for a little while; I got him a cup of ice tea. Even in good times Charles sleeps deeply.
About 8:30 p.m. I unpacked the sodas and Book of Common Prayer that I’d brought for him and left.
I’ll be heading back to the hospital in a little while, probably to spend the day. Even though I didn’t get to talk to one of Charles’ physicians yesterday the days of fear are over.
I’ll own to being as thankful for myself as Charles. When the hard tension ebbed to depression even moving my hand seemed to require willed focus. Knowing that Charles needs mostly to recover ordinary vitality to be freed from his hospital bed has let me recover my own sanity.
For proof here’s an irrelevant aside.
One of the things I hate about hospitals is that the televisions stay on in most rooms all day and night long. The game shows, gossip, sports blabber unceasingly. So I learned about James Coburn’s death. <em> <a href="http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=A24504" target="_blank">In Like Flint</a></em> and <em> <a href="http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=A36764" target="_blank">Our Man Flint</a></em> have been two of my favorite movies for decades. Coburn was responsible for much of their charm. I’m sorry to see him go but glad he’d recovered his own health and that his last years were good ones.
