Queer humanist? Gay Atheist? Sort of . . .

I'm a pansexual guy (see my definition) who enjoys sodomy (nowadays with a life partner).

No surprise that I'd call my weblog Pansexual Sodomite. I could've called it Pansexual Queer or Faggot: anything that reaffirmed my identification as a gay man. Sodomite seemed neglected and worth reclaiming for our side as we've reclaimed queer and the more lively political gays of the 70's used fag (i.e., the old publication, Fag Rag).

I'm a fan of Popdex. Every now and then I make a donation. You get a free ad with the donation. Last night I made one in the name of this blog. This morning I got an email from Shanti at Popdex:

I really hate censorship... but could you change the title of the ad? I guess preferably not using the word "sodomite" and something besides "pansexual". Just trying to keep popdex somewhat family friendly, that's all.

I'm a little peeved but not angry. I know Shanti isn't homophobic, just worried. But he is responding to the subtle pervasive homophobia that inheres in America's sexual consciousness.

I obliged Shanti by changing the blog name, for the ad anyway, to "Queer Humanist - Gay Atheist."

And so it goes, the tyranny of conformity, in the world's mightiest democracy.
