The Temple of the Mind: Education and Literary Taste in Seventeenth-Century England by John R. Mulder.
A compact, nicely focused book. It was interesting to discover that the conceits in Metaphysical Poetry derived from the oral arguments that scholars made to earn their degree. I’d never heard of Alexander Nowell’s Catechism. Sounds as though it was as important in defining the Christian intellectual inventory if not imagery of the time as the KJV and BCP.
