Demythologizing gay people

On and off here and in some of my other weblogs I've bitched about Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. In a reply to an email I think I said it in fewer words than before:
Mostly it is about demythologizing gay sexuality for the masses. I lived through school integration - that was when black kids were allowed to attend the same schools as white kids. Simply being exposed to ordinary black people zapped potential racism for millions of potential young racists.
Over here gay people find themselves the target of the most powerful political party, one that will most likely stay in power. Having the mass media show gay people as uninteresting as they are will do more to diminish heterosexual confusion and hostility than any sort of well-funded gay awareness program.
