Despite the matrimonial outbreak, most advocates, opponents and legal experts predict it will take years for cases to work their way through state courts. Some states will immediately recognize same-sex unions performed in Massachusetts, while others will wrestle with amendments to their state constitutions banning gay marriage. ...
"Same-sex marriages and their children will be a social reality, and the question is how the legal system assimilates this social reality," said Ronald J. Krotoszynski, a constitutional-law expert at Washington and Lee University. "We could be looking at 20 years or more for a complete resolution of these issues."
