Same-sex weddings: a long, long war

A few paragraphs from a levelheaded article on what may prove to be a long war (shorter if you live in a liberal state, much longer in the backward swamplands).

"In the long run, [same-sex marriage] is absolutely going to happen," said David Garrow, a legal and civil rights scholar who teaches at the Emory University law school. "Will it happen pell-mell, or will it be two-steps-forward-one-step-back over 15 years?"

Despite the matrimonial outbreak, most advocates, opponents and legal experts predict it will take years for cases to work their way through state courts. Some states will immediately recognize same-sex unions performed in Massachusetts, while others will wrestle with amendments to their state constitutions banning gay marriage. ...

"Same-sex marriages and their children will be a social reality, and the question is how the legal system assimilates this social reality," said Ronald J. Krotoszynski, a constitutional-law expert at Washington and Lee University. "We could be looking at 20 years or more for a complete resolution of these issues."

While it is not unexpected, it is sad to see that the Supreme court of California has ended the noble efforts of the Mayor of San Francisco and his staff.

I feel sorrow for the suffering caused by the smallmindedness of people and hope that they will see the error of their ways.

Social change is never as instantaneous as some people would like. Here in Washington the gay activists brought a suit against our State’s marriage law (it states marriage is between a man and a woman) as being against the State’s equal rights laws. The suit was announced with a lot of hoopla, but the reality that the process will go on for years was lost to nearly all but a few news analysts. The important thing, of course, is to keep the pressure on across the country.

Richard-

I wrote you a rather long email regarding gay marriage which described a growing population of “swing voter” Republicans who are becoming incensed over the continual rampage against personal freedom. Several times, the server (Yahoo) said it tried to send to you but it wasn’t delivered. Is the email addy atop the correct one?

Thanks,

Red
